Push It Up is the sixth track on the New Power Generation’s third and final ’solo' album Newpower Soul.
The song largely developed from a remix of Jam Of The Year (the original of which was recorded in late 1995 - early 1996 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota; see that song’s entry for details). This remix was recorded in Summer 1997, adding a rap by Doug E. Fresh -- verbatim from his song Tonite’s The Nite, released in 1996 on the soundtrack to Get On The Bus.
A clip of the remix was streamed on Love4OneAnother.com in the fall of 1997. Further work on the track took place on 12 August 1997, also at Paisley Park Studios, which is most likely when it was renamed Push It Up. The song was placed as the sixth track on an early configuration of Graham Central Station’s GCS 2000, but was removed as the album progressed.
On 20 February 1998, Love4OneAnother.com announced that Prince was deciding between Mad Sex, Newpower Soul and Push It Up as the first single, but it is not known if artwork or tracklists were compiled for these singles.
The song’s title is written on the album’s back cover as Push It Up!, but the booklet and the CD itself labels the track without the exclamation point, so that is how it is listed here.
