- The song was performed regularly by The Time during their opening sets on the Controversy Tour and the 1999 Tour. Prince did not take part in these performances, except for one show (24 March 1983 at San Antonio Convention Center Arena, San Antonio, TX, USA (assumed, based on average setlist - Prince played bass from backstage during The Time’s set replacing Terry Lewis, as both he and Jimmy Jam missed the show after being snowed in in Atlanta)).
- 29 October 2002 (a.m.): Le Bataclan, Paris, France (first public performance by Prince, although played previously during soundchecks)
- 23 January 2016: Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA (during sampler set)

Cool is the fourth track on The Time’s first album The Time, and, in late Summer 1981, Cool was released as the album’s second single. The song was written by Prince (music) and Dez Dickerson (lyrics), although the album does not contain any writing credits.
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in April 1981 at Prince’s Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota (along with the rest of the album). As with much of the rest of the album, the recording mostly features only Prince and Morris Day, although Lisa Coleman appears on background vocals.
A new version of the song, titled Cool 1990, was mentioned in an early draft of Graffiti Bridge, but it is not known if the song was re-recorded however.
A live version recorded in 1998 by Morris Day and (a revised line-up of) The Time was released in 2004 on Morris Day’s fourth solo album It’s About Time.
