The Love We Make is the eleventh track on the third disc of Prince’s 19th album Emancipation, the third album credited to . Prince has said that he used the song to "speak to the spirit of a friend lost to drugs"; it is believed that this refers to Jonathan Melvoin, Wendy and Susannah Melvoin’s brother, keyboard player for The Smashing Pumpkins, who had played on both Around The World In A Day and Parade, and who played keyboard in the live line-up of The Family. Melvoin died of a heroin overdose in New York City on 12 July 1996.

Basic tracking took place at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota in mid-July 1996 (on the same day as the recordings of Dreamin’ About U, Sleep Around, The Divine and the re-recording of Emale), following Jonathan Melvoin’s death.
