New Power Generation was the third single in the USA and the fourth in Europe (second single by Prince, following Melody Cool by Mavis Staples in Europe and Round And Round by Tevin Campbell) to be released from Prince’s twelfth album Graffiti Bridge. It was released two months after the album, and received a release around the world.
The 7" and cassette singles contained New Power Generation Part II as the b-side, while the 12" and CD maxi-singles contained several tracks which are given unique names and could be considered separate tracks, but are built around the foundation of the song New Power Generation (a template he later followed on Gett Off and Cream).
There were a couple of unreleased early configurations made of the maxi-single containing additional tracks - see Quotations and trivia for details.
The single reached number 64 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart and number 27 on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles Chart.
