Hot Thing was available as a promo-only single from Prince’s ninth album Sign O’ The Times, released in late 1987, following the album’s fourth and final commercial single, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man. The single marked the first promo-only single since Erotic City in 1984. The single entered the charts as I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man b-side and with the same catalog reference, Paisley Park 7-28288. It reached number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and number 14 in the Billboard Hot Black Singles Chart. The single was re-released as part of the Sign O’ The Times Singles collection in 2020.
