Face Down was the third promotional single to be released from Prince’s 19th album Emancipation, the third album credited to  . It was available five months after the album, in the USA only. The single contained three remixes of the song which were not available elsewhere.
The single did not enter the charts.
A full commercial release was planned (for May 1997), but at the time of the single’s promotional release, the division of EMI Records that handled the promotion of Emancipation was shut down as part of a restructuring of the whole entertainment conglomerate, and promotion of the album ceased as a result (which itself led to a cancellation of the commercial single).
