7 was the third single to be released from Prince’s 14th album , the second album to be credited to Prince and the New Power Generation.

It was released five weeks after the album (on the same day as the single Damn U), and received a release around the world. A maxi-single followed three weeks later in the USA. The single contained remixes of 7 by Keith "K.C." Cohen. The After 6 Edit and After 6 Long Version use the same backing music as 2 Whom It May Concern. The single’s main b-side, 7 (Acoustic Version), was actually a remix focusing on the song’s acoustic elements, rather than a separate acoustic recording.

The single reached number 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart, and number 61 on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles Chart.
