Forever In My Life is the ninth and final track on the first disc of Prince’s ninth album Sign O’ The Times. An early vocal run-through of the track, with different instrumentation, was released as the ninth track of Vault Tracks part 2, one of the discs with previously unreleased tracks included with the Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition in 2020, and was released to streaming and downloading platforms four weeks prior to the set’s release. After recording, Prince took a break before coming back to re-record the vocals, when he also replaced instrumentation to create the final album version. A live version was also included in the concert movie Sign O’ The Times, also incorporating lyrics from It.
Basic tracking (of both versions) took place on 7 August 1986 at Prince’s Galpin Blvd Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The background vocals unusually precede the lead vocals (rather than following them in the traditional manner) - this was created purely by accident as engineer Susan Rogers played back the layered vocals with incorrect intervals. Prince liked what he heard, and kept this arrangement. The track was included as the third track on the third and final disc of the on the 30 November 1986 configuration of the Crystal Ball album, which was eventually pared down and became Sign O’ The Times.

- The released mix of the Early Vocal Run-Through version was done by Niko Bolas specifically for the Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition release. It was made to replicate the original mix from the time the song was initially tracked, as much as possible. So even when a slightly different mix of this track might exist, the now released version is not considered a true alternate mix of the track.
