Kamasutra is the second track on the The NPG Orchestra's first and only album Kamasutra, initially released on cassette in 1997 (the album was later included as a bonus CD on the direct order version of Crystal Ball, Prince's 20th album Crystal Ball, the fourth album to be credited to SymbolSmallerBlue.png). Two years previously, however, a 0:34 excerpt was included as the 16th and final track on the NPG Records Sampler Experience cassette given to some concertgoers on The Ultimate Live Experience tour, featuring various clips of "upcoming releases".

Initial tracking dates are unknown, but it is likely that the track was recorded between 1994 - early 1995 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA, with orchestral overdubs by Clare Fischer's orchestra at Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, CA, USA. Additional recording took place between 1995-6 and the track was considered for release as Madhouse using the track title Seventeen, and an edit was included on the Man'O'War (Remix) NPG Records Sampler in 2000, which was ultimately unreleased.

The track contains an eight-note motif that is repeated on later tracks on the album (which was intended as one full-length "opus"). Its title is taken from the Kama Sutra, considered to be the most important work in a long line of Indian erotic literature, written by the Hindu philosopher Vātsyāyana (the Kama Sutra was previously mentioned by Prince in We Can Fuck (later released as We Can Funk)).
