Everybody Want What They Don’t Got is a song recorded on 13 July 1986 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California.
While sessions during July largely focused on recording for the Dream Factory album, neither this song or The Cross, recorded on the same day, were place on any configuration of the Dream Factory album.
The song’s lyrics appeared in the official 1994 book Neo Manifesto: Audentes Fortuna Juvat, along with lyrics of various other songs unreleased at that time, but it is unlikely that a companion audio release was ever planned.
During Prince: A Celebration in June 2000, computer screens at Paisley Park Studios offered names of a selection of tracks which users could vote on for inclusion on Crystal Ball Volume II, and while Everybody Want What They Don’t Got was chosen by fans, the project was ultimately abandoned.
The song was released in September 2020 as the fourth track of Vault Tracks part 2, one of the discs with previously unreleased tracks included with the Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition.
