Sexy M.F. is the second track on Prince’s 14th album  , the second album to be credited to Prince and the New Power Generation, and, three and a half months before the album’s release, Sexy M.F. was released as the album’s first single. Also in 1992, some remixes of the track, including the edit titled Sexy Mutha, were included on My Name Is Prince, the album’s second single. In 1993, Sexy M.F. was included as the 14th track on The Hits 2 (also included as the second disc of The Hits / The B-Sides).
Basic tracking took place on 10 October 1991 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (on the same day as Damn U). After hearing George Clinton’s Get Satisfied, Prince asked a similar sounding horn arrangement for Sexy M.F. to Dave Friedlander who engineered both songs.
Sexy M.F. was placed as the opening track of the album for a while, until Prince later added the track My Name Is Prince, recorded a few months previously. It was included as the third track (second song) on the March 1992 and Summer 1992 configurations of the album, before the Album Intro segue was removed.
